A woman died in Wia as a result of torture for refusing to sign a letter recanting her faith. PDF Print E-mail

09.7.2007 (Open Doors USA)-- Christians in Eritrea confirmed that Nigsti Haile (33) passed away at the Weaa Military Training Centre. She reportedly died yesterday morning, September 5, as a result of torture for refusing to sign a letter recanting her faith. Haile was among a group of 10 single Christian women who had been arrested at a church gathering in Keren and spent 18 months imprisoned under severe pressure. Before her arrest Haile worked for a relative while she studied to complete eleventh grade of her high school education. She was also an active member of the Rhema church.

Christians in Eritrea are in need of prayer as they continue to face intense persecution. It is clear that the government is continuing its campaign against Christians.

Open Doors reported on August 21 that the group of 10 single Christian women who had all been arrested 18 months ago were separated from other prisoners and taken to Weaa Military Training Centre and underwent torture after they refused to sign a letter recanting their faith.

The Eritrean government criminalized all independent Protestant churches in May 2002, closing their buildings and banning them from even meeting together in private homes.

More than 2,000 Eritrean Christians — including dozens of pastors and priests — remain locked up and subjected to severe torture for their religious beliefs in the nation’s jails, police stations and military camps. All have been denied legal counsel or trial, with no written charges filed against them. During the past year, at least four Christians have died from physical mistreatment while under arrest.

“We need to keep up our prayer vigil for the Christians in Eritrea,” says Open Doors USA President Dr. Carl Moeller. “Eritrea is a small country in Africa, but that doesn’t mean the persecution is less intense than in larger countries. The government keeps denying that the persecution is taking place. But that is not the truth. There are at least 2,000 reasons for praying for our imprisoned brothers and sisters in Christ.”

Crises and the suffering of Eritrean Christians in Eritrea
written by Biniam Abraha, September 24, 2007

Eritrea is in it's defining times in all it's history.A no longer new State is practicing everything but the intended purpose to free it's people when the brave men and women fought for our freedom .Obviousely this is carried by few leaders who continues to engage in egregious and systematic violation of a basic human rights. And Our christian brothers and sisters are suffering as a result of that.THIS SHUOLD BE A GRAVE CONCERN TO ALL OF US ABROAD AND WE SHOULD NOT REFRAIN FROM VIOCING OUR VIOCES AND MORE IMPORTANT WE SHOULD PRAY TO OUR LORD THAT HE MAY GIVE THEM THE STRENGTH TO WITHSTAND THE SUFFERING. GOD BLESS! B.

A tradgedy with no end in sight
written by Haki, September 28, 2007

The final aim of Sabiya is to subdue the unfortunate Eritrean youth into submittinting to its war adventure and ensure its eternal stay in power. That is why it is excercising a collective punishment on those who show even the slightest sense of confidence and freedom including spiritual freedom. That is why it has banned the freedom of religious practices be they major or minor ones.It is allergic to constructive criticism however constructive it might, as long as it does not include lengthy and vane praises of previous war adventures of specific Shabiya leaders.Shabiya's mortal enemy is neither the Woyane nor the Bush administration. Its real enemy is the Eritrean people and especially the youth. The rest of its everyday squable with the Woyanes an, America and the West in general is a cover up.You kow why?It knows well more than anybody else that in the end the true challenge will come from that quarter.

violation of religious right
written by halfar, October 19, 2007

the goverment of eritrea have stayed long time to violate the right of citizens in their belfe, and the violation is steel keeping on.the goverment use the traggedy of seperation, mean at the bigning it was only to evangelical churches that time the other people they join the goverment to perscute the members of evangelical churches.later he start persecuting the prists of orthodox churches.at last he starts also to catholic churchs.
here what i want to write is i am calling the people of eritrea to have unity to fight for his right first by praying second by low.becouse the constitution of the country also says every citizen have his own right to worship what he likes unless if it is not against goverment policy.
but while the people are doing oll their national duty they have right to worship their belive.let we fight for our right

What is the main benefit from the war againest minority chritian followers? hope everyone understans this one separation of families, suffering of poeple for no reason just due to the religion, fleeing away to other country. The government is doing this just to divert the attention of the poeple who can ask for the implimentation of the constitution. However, we chritians will never stop from worshiping our lord, witnessing about him, expanding His Kingdom, and raising our voice to be heard around the world. God will give us all the strength to do these all. Lets have stroning faith and Keep praying we will see the changes. God bless you.

they r persecuting jesus himself
written by yiteba, June 26, 2008

those people are not just persecuting eritrean christians but also jesus christ himself. because when saul was doing the same things to the first christians in israel, jesus appreared to him and told him "why r u persecuting me?". so persecuting christians means in other hand persecuting jesus himslef.they r having fight with God.one day God will show them how his hands r powerful. the time will not be long.May God be with them. oneday he will wipe their tears and reward them for their endurance and steadness in his name.
